    The coil is controlled with pwm using PD (proportional diferential) regulator. The distance is measured with a/d converter on light sensor.

    So is the coil just on/off or can it sense the distance to the object and adjust accordingly?

    I wonder if you can smooth it with PWM and some formulas for predicting its location when in freefall (taking into account the magnetic strength dropoff)

    Hi, yes, the coil is turned off while the object is between the light barrier and turned on when it’s not between the light barrier.
