Almost all magic tricks have the possibility of being cool or lame depending on how they are performed. If you’re interested in learning how to do magic, I recommend starting at the library – section 793.8 of the Dewey Decimal system is where you will find books on how to do magic.
Top among the books I recommend are any of the Self-Working Card Magic books by Karl Fulves or Mark Wilson’s Complete Course In Magic. Both have great instructions. Wilson’s book has more pictures. The first part of his book is all card stuff, but it also includes coins, ropes, rubber bands, hankerchiefs and building stage illusions.
There are web sites with instructions, but many will give you the same freebie tricks as everyone does in order to try to get you to make purchases. That’s not true of all sites, but of many. I would stay away from youtube for learning. Many of the things you learn from youtube are because someone performed an effect badly enough for you to figure it out. Why would you want to imitate that?
If videos are your thing, there are lots of videos on learning magic. These vary tremendously in quality of production and instruction. If you are going to invest your money in DVDs, start out with those by Michael Ammar, Michael Close, Dan Harlan or Jeff McBride. These men produce quality materials and teach the material very well. They all have DVDs on a number of types of magic and are readily available.
As you begin to develop some skills, you might also want to look into joining a magic club where you can get feedback from others who know what you’re doing and can help you advance to the next level. They can also point you to resources in your neighborhood you might not know about. The two largest magic clubs in the US are the Society of American Magicians and the International Brotherhood of Magicians. Both have websites with pages dedicated to helping you find a group in your area.
Hope some of this helps.
